Rakhis and Rakshabhandan gifts
CELEBRATE SISTERHOOD THIS RAKSHA BANDHAN: On this occasion, a sister ties a rakhi on her brother's wrist. This Rakhi is a holy thread and signifies her wishes for prosperity and happiness.
WHY IS RAKHI CELEBRATED? Celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Sravana (July/August), it celebrates a brother's love for his sister. On this day, the sisters tie the rakhi to their brothers' wrists to protect them from bad influences, and pray for their long life and happiness.
WHAT COLOR SHOULD A RAKHI BE? Traditionally, the colour of the Rakhi bracelet was red and even today it is the most common colour for rakhi. The red rakhi tied to the brother's right wrist is a symbol of the fire element.
WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE RAKHI OFF YOUR WRIST? Traditionally, you can remove Rakhi on the 15th day of the day of Raksha Bandhan. That's because, on the 15th day, a festival called Pola is celebrated when farmers are said to worship God Marbot Dev and also domestic animals like bulls.
THE CELEBRATION: On Raksha Bandhan's day, brothers and sisters wear new clothes and celebrate the festival with their parents, elders and grandparents. The ritual consists of lighting a diya or earth lamp that represents the deity of fire and the performance of aarti by the sisters.
